Thyroid Cancer

Thyroid cancer is cancer that develops from the tissues of the thyroid gland. It is a disease in which cells grow abnormally and have the potential to spread to other parts of the body.

Below are the Signs and Symptoms which can be cause for Thyroid Cancer.

  • A lump which is growing rapidly in the neck area.
  • Swelling in the neck
  • Pain in the neck
  • Hoarseness or other voice changes that do not go away
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Problem in breathing
  • Persistant  cough 

Most of the times a group of  doctor will plan the overall surgery procedure. This is called a multidisciplinary team. For thyroid cancer, this team may include a surgeon, medical oncologist, radiation oncologist, radiologist, nuclear medicine physician, and endocrinologist.

Surgery

Surgery is the removal of the tumor and some surrounding healthy tissue during an operation.  

Lobectomy:-

This surgery removes the thyroid gland’s lobe which includes cancerous nodule.

 Subtotal Thyroidectomy:-

In this  surgery Small parts of the thyroid gland is removed. 

Total Thyroidectomy:-

This surgery removes the entire thyroid gland.

Hormone treatment

After the surgery some Patients needs go undergo thyroid hormone therapy. which will replace the hormone that is needed by the body, the thyroid hormone medication may slow down the growth of any remaining differentiated cancer cells.

Radioactive iodine (RAI)

The thyroid absorbs almost all iodine that enters a body. This treatment sometimes used after thyroidectomy for early stage cancers (T1 or T2), but the cure rate with surgery alone is excellent. If the cancer does come back, radioiodine treatment can still be given.
